The Hidden Cost of Playing It Safe

There is nothing wrong with wanting stability.

A steady paycheck. A familiar routine. A career you know how to navigate. A life that feels predictable.

But sometimes what we call security is actually familiarity.  And sometimes what we call being responsible is fear that has learned how to sound logical.

"Maybe next year."

"I'm not ready yet."

"I need more experience."

"This isn't the right time."

"Once things settle down, I'll do it."

Any one of those statements may be completely reasonable.  But when we repeat them year after year, they can quietly become something else:

A pattern.

And that pattern can have a cost.

What Is Playing It Safe Costing You?

When we're considering a change, we tend to focus on the risk of taking action.

What if I fail? What if they say no? What if I make the wrong decision? What if I'm not ready?

But there's another question we don't ask nearly enough:

What could it cost me if I do nothing?

Another year without pursuing the opportunity.

Another year without asking for the promotion.

Another year allowing your work to go unnoticed.

Another year postponing the business, degree, certification, career change, or idea you've been thinking about.

Another year waiting to feel confident enough to begin.

There is risk in taking action.  But there can also be a significant hidden cost to inaction.  I know because I experienced it myself.

For years, I had perfectly logical reasons for staying where I was professionally. I had stability. I was raising my children. I had responsibilities. I was earning a good salary.

Nothing was necessarily "wrong."

But while I was protecting what I had, I wasn't paying enough attention to what I wasn't developing.  Eventually, circumstances forced me to move.

And that experience taught me something I wish I had understood much earlier:

You don't always need to become more capable.  Sometimes you need to recognize, communicate, and position the capabilities you've already spent years developing.

That realization inspired this month's article and podcast episode.

📖 This Month's Article

The Decisions That Quietly Shape Your Life

Why Playing It Safe Isn't Always the Safest Choice

Our lives are rarely shaped by one dramatic decision.  More often, they're shaped by hundreds of quiet ones.

The decision to speak up—or remain silent.

To apply—or assume we're not qualified.

To invest in ourselves—or postpone it another year.

To pursue growth—or remain somewhere simply because it's familiar.

In this month's article, I share my experience of spending nearly eighteen years with the same company and how I eventually recognized that many of the limitations I had accepted weren't necessarily facts.

They were stories I had stopped questioning.

And as you read it, consider this:

What story about yourself have you repeated for so long that you've stopped questioning whether it's actually true?

Episode 7: The Hidden Cost of Playing It Safe

What if staying where you are is also a risk?

In this episode of Empowered by Self-Love: The Reinvention Series, I take this month's conversation further.

We explore how fear can disguise itself as logic, why confidence often comes after action, and why we need to consider not only the risks associated with making a change—but also the potential cost of staying exactly where we are.

I also share five practical tools to help you recognize when you may be playing smaller than your potential:

1. The Fact or Story Test Challenge the assumptions you've accepted about yourself.

2. Calculate the Cost of Inaction Consider what staying exactly where you are may cost you over time.

3. Take the Smallest Courageous Step Stop waiting for complete confidence and identify one action you can take now.

4. Create an Impact Inventory Recognize and learn to communicate the value you've already created.

5. Borrow Perspective Surround yourself with people who can challenge your thinking and help you see possibilities you may not see on your own.

While you're listening, ask yourself:

If the decisions you're making today become the life you're living five years from now...would you still make the same ones?

💛 Are You Ready to Stop Playing Small Professionally?

Sometimes playing small doesn't look like a lack of ambition.  It looks like being highly capable—but invisible.

Doing more than your title suggests, but struggling to communicate your value.

Having leadership ability, but second-guessing yourself when it's time to speak up.

Wanting the next opportunity, but not knowing how to position yourself for it.

Or knowing you're capable of more, while quietly wondering:

"Am I really ready?"

This is where coaching can make a difference.

Through Empowered-SelfLove LLC, I work with professionals who want to strengthen three areas that can significantly influence how they show up, lead, and move forward.

CONFIDENCE

Build greater trust in yourself and your abilities.

Challenge self-doubt, stop minimizing your accomplishments, communicate more confidently, and learn to take action even when you don't feel 100% ready.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership isn't defined only by your title.

Strengthen your leadership presence, communication, boundaries, decision-making, and confidence to contribute your perspective instead of waiting for permission to lead.

POSITIONING FOR SUCCESS

Being good at what you do isn't always enough if people don't understand the value you bring.

Learn how to identify your transferable skills, articulate your impact, strengthen your professional positioning, and communicate your experience in a way that reflects the level at which you're capable of contributing.

You may not need to reinvent who you are.

You may need to stop minimizing who you've already become.

If you know you're capable of more but aren't sure how to move forward, let's talk.

Whether you're working on your confidence, stepping into greater leadership, navigating a professional transition, or learning how to better position yourself for the opportunities you want, a Qualification Call is an opportunity for us to discuss where you are, where you want to go, and whether coaching may be the right next step for you.

One Last Thought...

Before you close this newsletter, think about one thing you've been telling yourself you'll do "eventually."

Now ask yourself: What am I really waiting for?

You don't have to quit your job.

You don't have to start a business tomorrow.

You don't have to completely reinvent your life.

But you can make one different decision.

One conversation.

One application.

One boundary.

One introduction.

One investment in yourself.

One step outside what's familiar.

Because the quiet decisions you're making today are creating the life you'll eventually look back on.

Make sure they're taking you somewhere you actually want to go.

Thank you for being part of this community and allowing me to be part of your journey.

Until next month—keep choosing courage, keep growing, and keep becoming the version of yourself you've always been seeking.
